  1. I'm glad you were able to see the positive side of the editorial, and your points are duly noted, because I myself was not so pleased.

Why give more credence to such an ineffectual and intensely self-interested leader? The assumption seems to be that Olmert is pure in his motivations for showing Israelis these "belated truths," but I would vigorously counter such an assertion.

Furthermore, at a time when Israelis need to bunker in and accept the status quo with no Palestinian peace partner, Olmert is essentially pushing Israelis to rush into a peace agreement, regardless of conditions on the ground.

Israelis do need to seriously contemplate and conclude what to do with the disputed territories, but this should not include a rash peace agreement that endanger's Israel's security.

  2. Shamsham, you properly characterize Ehud. He is self-interested and corrupt. He is an opportunist to the nth.

  4. You both are the opportunists. Olmert is a man of vision, and you simply can't come to grips with this.

Back to reality: Matan, great point. The NYT seems to be so pleased with Olmert's statements, that it prevents them from:

    1. reconciling Olmert's statements advocating withdrawal with his statements demonstrating no faith in Palestinian intentions -- from the same interview no less.

    2. understanding that such statements representing apparent compromise are much more newsworthy from the Palestinian side.

You're last point is worth noting, Matan. Olmert should be promoting a new consciousness about the territories' status, rather than rushing head-long into statements future Israeli leaders shouldn't have to validate.

Matt...You left out comment on the editorial's criticism of Olmert for doing nothing to improve life in the West Bank. It was shallow criticism.
