"Striking Deep Into Israel, Hamas Employs an Upgraded Arsenal"
A12, Thursday 1/01/09
By Mark Mazzetti
No major problems worth noting in this report on Hamas' upgraded rocket arsenal.
One minor point though. Mazzetti states that "American officials said Hamas' tactics in recent years had evolved from suicide bombings to more sophisticated attacks like roadside bombings and bombs set off by cellphones."
While Hamas is no doubt looking to make more "sophisticated" its arsenal, it was forced to "evolve" from suicide bombings because of Israel's defensive measures – specifically the fences around Gaza and ringing most of the West Bank. This is not mentioned, as is typical of successful Israeli counter-terrorism.
Suicide bombings, if able to be carried out, would still be the option of choice for Hamas since the bomber can just insert him or herself into a place guaranteeing maximum civilians deaths.
