"The Toughest Q's Answered in the Briefest Tweets"
WK4, Week in Review, Sunday, 1/4/09
By Noam Cohen
A short and informative piece on the recent Israeli move to field questions using Twitter, the microblogging service.
Normally sensible MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow is one of those cited who "mocked the idea." "The Israeli government is trying to explain a conflict that people write books about, a conflict that newspaper writers struggle to explain in 2,000 words, in 140 characters at a time," Maddow remarked.
What Maddow's short-sighted reasoning misses is that these books, papers and other media – if even reaching people – are the cause of much misunderstanding about Israel and the conflict. Looking at the examples from the published Q&A, the Israeli consulate's smart answers to an array of questions are a small step in the right direction for Israeli public relations that is notorious [among caring and informed observers] for its defects.
